Nurse and Mom to Cole, my seven year old son, our Jr. Adoption Counselor.
A bit of history in the many years that I have adopted rescued dogs:
I had a Rottie that I adopted at two years of age. He was diagnosed with bone
cancer at age ten and went to the Rainbow Bridge six months later. This
was very, very difficult for me and I swore I could never endure the pain of
losing a dog again.
I was at a Pet store in Natick last year and saw an urgent listing for a dog
named Haley. She was at Baypath Humane Society, severely depressed. Haley was
going "kennel crazy" as many pit bulls do in kennel environments. She was not
eating, spinning and banging herself into the kennel walls. I called Noreen and
offered to foster Haley. Noreen was concerned that I had a cat as Haley is very
prey driven. I assured Noreen that I would be sure that they would be kept
separated if they did not get along. Haley came to my home as my foster, and
after falling in love with her, I adopted her four months later. I have
since fostered ten dogs and puppies. All have been placed into wonderful homes.
My son Cole had a very hard time at first when our foster dogs went to their
forever homes. Cried himself to sleep many nights. Even at the young age
of six, he now understands why we have to say goodbye to our fosters, "We can
save another homeless dog Mom."
I recently adopted Willie Mays Haz. We love him very much, he fits perfectly
into our family. He is a very large Pit Bull, all 80 lbs of him, but he is so
gentle and wonderful with my son. And....Haley absolutely adores him.
