Love NOT Fear

Now more than ever pit bulls in the state of Massachusetts need to find their special forever home.  While state representatives and senate members continue their debate on dangerous dog laws and proposed breed specific legislation (BSL), PittieLove Rescue has seen its numbers of owner surrender inquiries jump significantly, and our adoption applications dwindle.

AlexaandJustice1Being a foster home based rescue the number of deserving pit bulls we can accept is limited and while we do our best to help find other avenues for those who wish to surrender the fact that many may be ending up in shelters that don’t abide by a “no-kill” policy is still a very real fact.  With the number of potential adopters on the decline because of the potential of BSL, more and more pit bulls will share this same sad fate.

So what needs to be done?  First, people need to contact their local legislation and state representatives.  Ways to contact them can be found at www.MassFedDog.org. Please take the time to write letters and tell the story of your favorite pit bull whether it’s your family pet, a friends, relatives, it makes no difference.  Legislators need to know that there are significantly more good pit bulls and pit bull owners than what they hear about on the 5 o’clock news.  They need to know that happy, productive pit bulls live right in their surrounding area.  Tell them that support needs to be behind Representative Hills legislation (H1948) which supports stricter dangerous dog laws but does not define a dog as dangerous based solely on the dogs breed. This bill puts the control into the hands of the animal control officers and the responsibility of a dog’s action on the owners.

JellyBeanandAvaSecond, people need to Love NOT Fear.

Love a pit bull who needs a happy forever home; don’t fear that they are currently under scrutiny from Mass legislators.  Do the best you can to show how wonderful and social these dogs can be.  Any responsible rescue or shelter is going to perform temperament testing on all animals before they are adopted out.  Take your time and find the pit bull with the right personality for your living condition.  Whether you’re a couch potato or a marathon runner pit bulls are the best “training” partners.

Machonew1 Love a pit bull who hasn’t had the chance to live the life it deserves; don’t fear these wonderful dogs because of how they are portrayed by the media.  Do your own research and learn the truth behind the hype.  Like any responsible person, gather all of the information before drawing a conclusion.  Breed information can be found at www.pbrc.net and www.pittieloverescue.com as well as many other great sites out there hosted by people who know the true nature of what it means to be a pit bull.  It has been shown time and time again that the media and other public outlets sensationalize incidents involving pit bulls and the public needs to know the truth.

Love a pit bull unconditionally they way they will love you; don’t fear ridicule from friends or even relatives.  Education is the key here for you and your pit bull.  First, have your dog become a breed ambassador by rigorous obedience training.  When ready, have them take the AKC Good Citizen test.  Like most pit bulls they should pass with flying colors and you can bring their certificate to all those who doubt just how smart and balanced your pit bull is.  Even more importantly, take the time to research what it takes to be a responsible owner.  Learn the reasons why pit bulls, and all dogs, should be spayed and neutered.  Take the time to understand the breed’s characteristics, both strengths and weaknesses.  Like all dogs, a little education on how to keep a pit bull safe, happy, and healthy is the key to a friendship that will last for a very long time and will hopefully change the minds of the naysayers who once doubted your choice of companion.

Please find it in your heart to speak out for all of the pit bulls in the communities who can not speak for themselves.  PittieLove Rescue, and many other responsible shelters and rescues will work hard to find the dog that is right for you.  Don’t become overwhelmed with political pressure and media coverage.  Remember it's Love NOT Fear that will help these dogs find their forever homes!
